Conquer: The Need for a Study on Purity for Men

 The Problem

Never before has one issue affected the church so significantly at the same time as pornography. Pornography use in our culture is a growing problem. Each of us has a relationship with pornography - either we have struggled with it ourselves in the past,  currently, or we know someone close to us who has. Check out these statistics* that help us understand the scope of the problem that pornography has caused the Church...

  1. The porn industry’s annual revenue is more than the NFL, NBA, and MLB combined. It is also more than the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC.

  2. The average age that a child is first exposed to porn is 11, and 94% of children will see porn by the age of 14.  So it is not “if” your children will see it, but “when” will they see it.

  3. Pornography use increases the marital infidelity rate by more than 300%.

  4. 76% of 18-24 year old Christians actively seek out pornography.

  5. Only 7% of pastors say their church has a program to help people struggling with pornography.

Whichever category you fall into, we want to take some steps towards providing freedom to people through the gospel. But the reality is that there is such a high shame and guilt factor that comes along with this sin that many feel hopeless. I know I did. I have personally wrestled with this issue. An early exposure to porn and easy access over the years created a mountain of struggle to overcome. Honestly, this is something I thought I would never get over. But what I've learned over the last few years has provided me with freedom like I've never known before. I am confident that what I have learned can help others, and even help you to help others. There is hope.

The Opportunity

Our opportunity is one that puts us upstream. We can’t just snipe out this issue. We have to get educated and equipped so that we can effectively minister to those who have struggled, are struggling, and will struggle. We are taking this opportunity by diving into a video series (trailer below) starting Oct 1 that will meet at Citadel Square on Monday evenings. This series called "The Conquer Series" does a great job of educating men on the issue, keeping the content gospel centered and providing practical structures to live out.

We just finished our first pilot of the series. We had 20 men come for at least one of the educational pieces with an average of 12 each week. Six of those men walked through the full program that includes discussion, homework and practica biblically- grounded structures. Here is what people had to say about it…

  • “I know know more about the nature of addiction and why ‘just try harder’ doesn’t work”

  • “I learned how the enemy is attacking me in my struggle and how i can sniff out these attacks before they come now”

  • “The problem is not porn, that’s just the fruit on the tree.  The problem is deeper, it’s an intimacy issue.”

Next Steps

Pray. Learn more. Get help. Help others. I would love to have you join us for this time.  Like I said, whether you struggle, have struggled, know someone struggling, or by God's grace know nothing about the issue, you will benefit from this time together. My contact info is below, if you have questions about it, call me. If Mondays don't work for you right now and you want to learn more please let me know, I'd be glad to grab some time with you to fill you in.

You can see a trailer of the series here: www.conquerseries.com

Really want to dive in?  Watch this 30 min recap of a conference I attended where Barna Group shared the results of their research listed above. You will not regret it….https://setfreesummit.org

May God use us to eradicate this issue in our church, our city and in the world.
