Kids Lesson: Jesus Returned To Heaven
Jesus Returned to Heaven–Matthew 28, Acts 1
Jesus left earth and returned to heaven, but He did not leave us alone. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us do God’s work on earth—telling people about Jesus so they can follow Him—while we wait for Jesus to come back and make everything new.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” - John 11:25
Bible Story - Jesus Returned To Heaven
Bible Story Video
After Jesus died and came back to life, Jesus spent time with His disciples and taught them even more about God’s kingdom. One day, Jesus told His disciples to go to a mountain in Galilee. The disciples saw Jesus there, and they worshiped Him. Jesus gave them a mission, a very important job to do. Jesus said, “I am in charge of everything in heaven and on earth.” He commanded His disciples—and everyone who trusts in Jesus—by saying, “Go. Make followers of Me in every place on earth. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have told you. Remember that I am always with you, even until the very end of time.” Jesus told His disciples to stay in Jerusalem until God sent the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “You will have power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. You will tell people about Me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Then something amazing happened! Jesus’ disciples saw Jesus go up into the sky! A cloud took Him out of their sight. As the disciples looked into the sky, two angels in white clothes stood beside them. The angels said, “Why are you staring up into the sky? Jesus has been taken into heaven. One day, He will come back again in the same way.”

Draw where and who you can tell
Give each kid a sheet of paper. Ask them to think of places they go where they can tell people about Jesus. Be ready to offer suggestions such as at the playground, a friend’s house, daycare, preschool, grocery store, restaurant, and so forth. Suggest they choose one place to draw. Then ask children to think of people they know that they can tell about Jesus. Encourage them to add the person they named to their drawing
Say: Jesus gave His disciples a mission. He told them to go and make followers of Him in every place on earth. That is still our mission today as people who love and follow Jesus. We can tell everyone everywhere we go the good news that Jesus died and came back to life to save people from sin.
Elementary Discussion Questions
Help your kids find Acts 1. Ask the following questions:
Where did Jesus tell the disciples to wait? (Jerusalem, Acts 1:4)
What did Jesus say the disciples would receive? (power from the Holy Spirit, Acts 1:8)
How will Jesus return? (in the same way He went to heaven, Acts 1:11)
How can we make disciples? Guide the kids to think through the parts of the Great Commission. Part of the command helps explain how to make disciples: teach them to obey Jesus and baptize them. Help the kids remember that baptism and obedience do not save us, but they are important signs that help show a person has
put her faith in Jesus.
How is having the Holy Spirit with us more beneficial than having Jesus still on earth? Point out that everything God does is always best. We know that the Holy Spirit with us is better because that’s how God planned things to be. In addition, it is better for the Holy Spirit to indwell all believers everywhere, than for Jesus to be on earth in one place at a time.
How do you feel knowing that Jesus will come back? Help the kids focus on the hope we have for the future. The world is still broken by sin, but as we obey Jesus and make disciples, there will be more and more people trying to do God’s will and bring justice and peace to the world. Someday, Jesus will come and bring perfect, everlasting peace and justice
Say: Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission. Each of us who has faith in Jesus is part of that same mission today! We live on mission to make disciples.
