Two Reminders of God's Sovereignty
If you’re anything like me, you have been checking the news every five minutes for the last week or more. I’m typically not one who checks things that often, but since the Coronavirus news began to break in the US, I have followed it closely, alternating between local and national news sites, wanting to know more about where it is spreading, what is closing, and what our leaders are saying we should do.
Meanwhile, I’m trying to help my family navigate through the changes, answer my kids’ questions, work from home, check on neighbors, and stay in contact with others to see how they are dealing with it.
Needless to say, it all has been a bit overwhelming. However, in the midst of the chaos, God has used music to encourage me greatly, and I want to share two songs that really touched my heart yesterday.
Sovereign Over Us
The first song is Sovereign Over Us.
Some of the lyrics are:
Your plans are still to prosper
You have not forgotten us
You're with us in the fire and the flood
You're faithful forever
Perfect in love
You are sovereign over us
This song reminded me that, no matter what is happening out in the world, and even if everything seems uncertain and scary, that God is SOVEREIGN (a fancy way to say IN CONTROL.) I can rest in God’s goodness, that even when something next-level crazy is happening like the Coronavirus, God still loves us, He is with us, and He is in control. I can rest in His promises and trust that He will care for us in ways we can’t even imagine.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.“- Jeremiah 29:11
God Is Able
The second song that struck me was, God is Able.
Some of the lyrics are:
Lifted up, He defeated the grave
Raised to life, Our God is able
In His name, We overcome
For the Lord Our God is able
God is with us, He will go before
He will never leave us, He will never leave us
God is for us, He has open arms
He will never fail us, He will never fail us
In the same vein of Sovereign Over Us, this song reminds me that God is WITH US, and is IN CONTROL. He will never leave us, and he will never fail us. So no matter how many people the virus infects, how many businesses shut down, if schools don’t open back up, or we are ordered not to leave our homes, we can rest in the fact that God is ABLE and he will prevail.
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” - Ephesians 3:20-21
